Yayasan Jaga Laut Indonesia (Jala Ina) is a non-profit organization that works on issues in the Coast, Sea and Small Islands in the Maluku Islands.
Jala Ina actively advocates and campaigns on issues in coastal areas and small islands in the Maluku Islands, prioritizing the principles of justice and sustainability for shared living spaces. Jala Ina focuses on various issues, including Coastal, Marine, and Small Island Conservation, Sustainable Fisheries, the Climate Crisis, and Indigenous Communities.
HISTORY
Karang Nusantara began in 2018 as a campaign for coral reef conservation in the Maluku Islands. This initiative arose from concerns about the increasingly threatened condition of coral reef ecosystems due to human activities, particularly in coastal areas and small islands that depend on coastal resources. Through various campaigns and educational activities, Karang Nusantara strives to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving coral reef ecosystems as a vital part of their lives.
During Karang Nusantara's journey, it was discovered that one of the reasons for the lack of concern for reef sustainability was a non-contextualized educational model. Communities in coastal areas and small islands have not received much education related to the coast and the sea as their living space and source of livelihood. Therefore, on December 13, 2019, the Maritime School was established as a shared learning space for children in the Maluku Islands to learn about the coast, sea, and small islands as the shared living space of the Maluku Islands community.
To strengthen and maximize the benefits of Karang Nusantara and Sekolah Bahari, Jala Ina was established in 2022. Its presence embodies the unifying vision of the two initiatives for more focused and sustainable action. Jala Ina has since grown into a collaborative space for coastal and small island communities to promote fair, sustainable, and local wisdom-based natural resource management.
